WIN for KC Youth Programs

Programs such as the Youth Advisory Board and Peer Mentor allow girls and women of all ages to work together to promote female participation in sports. WIN for KC is giving girls the opportunity to improve leadership skills while gaining knowledge about the importance of fitness and a healthy lifestyle through our youth programs.

Peer Mentor Program

WON by ONE is a unique peer-mentoring program that pairs high school female athletes as mentors with fifth and sixth grade girls. The girls meet after school for one and a half hours once a week for eight weeks. The first segment (45 minutes) is spent in small groups working through a curriculum created by Dr. Leslie Dunn of the Teel Institute that deals with self-esteem, goal setting techniques, effective decision making skills, and other important life skill issues. The second segment (45 minutes) is spent exploring various sports and fitness opportunities. The mentors must attend a three-hour training program and receive a t-shirt, training notebook, and custom carry bag. The mentees receive a t-shirt and journal.

This program addresses two important issues; increasing self-esteem in girls and teaching girls the positive benefits that sports and fitness participation can have over one's lifetime (reducing risk of breast cancer, osteoporosis, and depression, etc). For more information or to get your school involved, contact Patti Phillips.
