2006 NCAA Tennis Re-cap
Rockhurst University and the Kansas City Sports Commission hosted 32 tennis teams from universities and colleges across the country competing in the NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships May 10-13, held at the Plaza Tennis Center and Homestead Country Club.
Second-ranked and undefeated Brigham Young-Hawaii regained its title in the Women’s Tennis Championships. BYU-Hawaii, 27-0, turned back top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State (Ga.) by a 5-3 score in the finals after falling to the Pirates in the 2005 championship match in Florida. The Seasiders have now won four of the past five NCAA titles and took home their sixth first-place trophy since 1999 under coach Dave Porter.
Third-ranked Valdosta State (Ga.) rallied in three singles matches to defeat Lynn University (Fl) 5-2 in capturing the Men’s Tennis Championships. Valdosta State, 26-1, took home its first NCAA men’s tennis championship. The Blazers best finish previously was second place at the 2004 national tournament in Florida.
