The Sprint Center:Defining Kansas City for the Next Generation
by Mr. Kevin M. Gray, President

I could hardly wait to get inside!
However, it was such a beautiful day that we decide to walk for the historic groundbreaking ceremony. The jaunt took us all of 11 minutes from our office on the west side of downtown. We were able to take in the scope of our new downtown, and along the way we spotted plenty
of parking to support all of our attractions!
We passed through the Cordish Development (KC Power and Light District), turned north and bam – there we were. Face to face with a vision come true.
The fabulous new Sprint Center and the College Basketball Experience (CBE), opened their doors to our community.
It was more than I expected.
I knew the DADT (Downtown Arena Design Team) was essentially like working with the Sports Architectural Dream Team and that ESI, the designers of the CBE was second to none. But, nothing prepares you for the real thing. I was blown away!
Credit Mayor Kay Barnes who was steadfast in the beginning and lock step with our vision as an organization. After several years of intense study, a consensus was established that a new arena had to perform several important functions:
- Contribute to making Kansas City a competitive city
- Provide a solid base for revenue generation
- Become a destination point for visitors
- Enhance the fan and tourism experience
A creative funding strategy was formulated to match our spectacular site that met all the priorities set forth.
What we discovered is that often, projects of this magnitude are initiated with a design concept that materializes ahead of a fundamental financing plan. What we did as a city was to first determine a financial framework that was consistent with long-term objectives of our city. We further challenged ourselves by working to seize the moment and ultimate design of one of the most unique and functional entertainment and sports venues in the United States.
The integration of the College Basketball Experience is very special. It allows Kansas City, the cradle of college basketball, to showcase the most storied basketball history of any city in America. This venue will serve as a catalyst to generate new sources of revenue for our city, and, a new star that will shine for the people of our region.
The state of the art technology and architectural aspect of the Sprint Center greatly enhances the overall fan experience. It will serve as a showcase to an emerging entertainment district that is essentially tied to the Sprint Center.
By anchoring to the west with historic Municipal Auditorium, we may have the most dynamic atmosphere for marquee events like Big 12 Men’s and Women’s Basketball, NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball, the CBE Classic and other events.
We are working on big plans as we speak. In March of 2008 we will welcome the Big 12 back to Kansas City. Along with our other basketball tournaments we will be in a position to present the most exciting month of basketball this community has seen. We will share those plans in the near future.
These defining moments happen maybe once in our generation.
The bell rung and our community answered.
This is our time.
The Kansas City Sports Commission is proud of our role in this initiative. The Sprint Center will serve as a cornerstone of our world class city for years to come. Take pride in what we have accomplished.
Congratulations Kansas City!
