December 2007 Newsletter

A Message from the President

by Kevin M. Gray, President

Thanks to each and every one of you for all your support in 2007.  We have enjoyed another great year and frankly, we could not be as effective of an organization without the support of so many wonderful and dedicated citizens who are striving to make our community better.  Together, we have achieved a number of “first” events in our city, many successes and honored milestones throughout the year.  Among the achievements:

  • Sprint Center Grand Opening (“…I can attest first hand, that if they [Kansas City Sports Commission] had not played such an integral role in supporting the effort every step of the way, we might not be where we are today.” former Kansas City, Missouri Mayor, Kay Barnes)
  • College Basketball Experience and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Grand Openings
  • Inaugural sporting event at the Sprint Center, the College Basketball Experience Classic
  • Inaugural Tour of Missouri cycling event which featured point-to-point racing in six stages throughout the state of Missouri
  • Legendary Border Showdown at Arrowhead featuring Kansas vs. Missouri (second largest crowd in Arrowhead history)
  • Record crowd of over 6,000 participants in the Waddell and Reed Kansas City Marathon – a 58% increase in one year
  • Anticipated return of the Big 12 Basketball Championships in 2010 and 2011
  • Host city to the Missouri State Volleyball Championships
  • Relocated the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to downtown Kansas City, Missouri
  • Served on the search committee for two new area athletic directors: Richard Konzem at Rockhurst University and Tim Hall at UMKC
  • Recruited a new men’s basketball head coach at UMKC, Matt Brown
  • Generated over $200,000 for local Kansas City charities through the SportKC online registration tool including: CCVI, Autism, Leukemia/Lymphoma and Rotary Youth Camps

We could not have realized these achievements without our board, staff and community partners.  The coming year holds great promise for our region as we prepare for the opening of the Kansas City Power and Light District, return of Big 12 basketball and football and more area accomplishments. This is a once-in-a-generation renaissance taking place throughout this region and it is a great time to be affiliated with this organization.

Lastly, this month marks the end of a successful career for one of Kansas City’s most dedicated and spirited sports fans, John Shore. During his tenure with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, John headed the "Victory Builders" campaign that raised $8.3 million to double the size of FCA's World Headquarters at its current location overlooking the Truman Sports Complex. The staff of Kansas City Sports Commission & Foundation extends its gratitude for John’s service and commitment to sports in Kansas City and throughout the country.
