Board to guide Strategic Planning
by Mr. Kevin M. Gray, President

The Sports Commission is heading into a strategic planning process over the next two months with the leadership of our outstanding board and executive committee. At the conclusion of this important exercise, we hope to emerge with a plan to develop our capacity to serve our community with the promotion and cultivation of sporting opportunities.
Our organization’s work is recognized as important within the community that includes decision makers within the political and civic industries. Many look to us for assistance and input in promoting events, or bringing high quality games, events and teams to our metropolitan area.
Over the years, since 1989, we have conducted several strategic planning or leadership assessment analyses that are critical roadmaps for staff to prioritize and follow. In the past, these plans have produced successful initiatives like WIN for KC and our online registration program for nonprofit sports events. These are great examples of turning ideas into flourishing programs that fill a void and make a significant impact in our community.
Since our last organizational strategic plan, we’ve worked to secure a long-term solution for our Royals and Chiefs, a new sports arena, enhancements to historic Municipal Auditorium and develop a community focus on the sport of college basketball with the advent of the NABC’s College Basketball Experience and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. We now remain steadfast in helping establish a new home for our Kansas City Wizards. We believe this initiative has a substantial benefit to our community and we look forward to a successful outcome.
We’re grateful for the leadership of our chair, Ken Hager and executive committee member, Tom Murphy, who will join facilitator John Schuster as we identify our strengths and work to identify what should be our defining characteristics for the next five years. We want to be challenged, but realistic, completely embracing what our goals and tasks are in the future. During this process, we welcome your input and plan to share the results of our plan with our members.
Personally, I view this as a very important process for our organization and take it very seriously. We will transform the strategic plan into strategic action, and strengthen our ability to link mission with vision and ultimately, work to make our community better.

Plan on Red Friday Luncheon & Pep Rally Sept. 21

The 15th Annual Red Friday celebration is brought to you by the Kansas City Sports Commission, First Choice, and the Red Coaters.
Purchasing your morning paper from any of the Red Friday volunteers directly benefits Kansas City charities. The 2007 Red Friday charities are TLC for Children, Donnie Edwards-Best Defense Foundation, and Boys and Girls Clubs of Kansas City.
Join 450 Chiefs fans for an exclusive preview of the 2007 season from members of the Chiefs administration, as well as former Chiefs on September 21st at the Red Friday Football Luncheon presented by Midwest United Credit Union. After a buffet lunch each panelist will share their thoughts about the upcoming season and then attendees will be given the opportunity to ask questions directly to the panelists.
Afterwards head down to Westport where Dustin Colquitt, Donnie Edwards, and Jarrad Page will kick off the free pep rally hosted by the Kansas City Sports Commission and the Chiefs Red Coaters. The two groups will host the FREE “Red Friday Pep Rally” September 21 from 5-to-10 p.m. in Westport. The Chiefs players will kick off the rally, followed by live entertainment, food, vendors and fun.

Our night at "The K" was a Hit!

The KCSC held its first ever Night @ The K prior to game
3 of the 4-game series between the Kansas City Royals and
New York Yankees on July 25th, 2007 at Kauffman Stadium. Nearly 200 guests joined the Sports Commission staff for a great pre-game event.
The event was made even more special when Royals Hall of Fame 2nd Baseman and 8-time Gold Glove Award Winner Frank White stopped by to meet the attendees and take a few pictures.
Another highlight of the event was a drawing to throw out the opening pitch that evening. David Sander from Overland Park, KS, won the honor and took the mound in front of a great crowd.
Sportscaster Chris Hamblin of 610Sports was on hand to broadcast a live remote, while the guests enjoyed delicious barbeque from Yahooz of the EatPB&J restaurant group, and beverages from Boulevard Brewery.
All in all it was a great evening for everyone who joined us, even though the Yankees weren’t so kind to the boys in blue on the field. If you missed out on this great event, but would like to take part in the 2008 Sports Commission Night @ The K, please contact Jay Wilson, Director of Membership & Development @ 816.474.4652, ext.233, or e-mail him at jwilson@sportkc.org, to be included in the mailing list for next years event!
